Tom Hanks apologized for calling Mormons supporting California’s Proposition 8 or the ban on gay marriages “un-American” but stands firm on his belief that Prop 8 is codified discrimination which runs counter to the Constitution’s promise. However, he said, this is not reason enough to call the anti-gay marriages Mormons un-American because everyone has a right to vote for what they believe in and this is what being American is all about. Hanks made this remarks during last week’s premiere of the HBO Series “Big Love” which he is producing.
Hanks said calling the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints un-American only creates more division when what the Americans need now is respectful disagreement. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints spokeswoman Kim Farah said nothing could be more American than expressing an opinion in a free and democratic society. She added it is more un-American to say that people could not vote their conscience.
