Clint Eastwood has once again been snubbed by the Academy but this time he is grinning his way to the banks. His Gran Torino movie may have to get an Oscar nomination for him as Best Actor but it is making a lot of waves in the box office with up to $110 million in cash. To hell with the Academy Awards must be Eastwood’s dialogue after he was shown his box office receipts. Public review of Gran Torino shows it is a terrific movie that merits millions in receipts. Suits Warner Bros fine because the movie Dark Knight, which they banked on to the point of entirely ignoring Gran Torino, did not make it to the Best Picture category. Warner Bros seemed to notice Gran Torino and made efforts to promote the movie only between the second week of December to the first week of January which was already too late.
Warner played dead over Gran Torino that people did not even notice if there was even a premiere for the movie–or was there? Despite the lack of promotion for the movie it is surprising that Gran Torino is leading the pack with the other Oscar Best Pictures at the tailend. This is very good news for Eastwood since he owns the movie which took $33 million to produce. At least, Gran Torino will have the honor to be known as the most profitable movie with a big star since last year. Had Warner played its cards right, Gran Torino would have been a shoo in for Best Picture and Eastwood for Best Actor. Remember Eastwood’s “Unforgiven”? Expect Gran Torino to have the same classic western storyline with a touch of Eastwood’s golden finger.
