Tom Hanks’ hit movie Saving Private Ryan has been named the best war film of all time.

The 1998 epic was directed by Steven Spielberg and saw Hanks in the lead role.

In a new poll by DVD rental firm Lovefilm, movie buffs voted the flick the best war film ahead of The Great Escape, starring Steve McQueen.

Schindler’s List, starring Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, came third, with Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, starring Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando, in fourth.
