The Superbowl New Orleans Saints match became the most watched television show ever.

According to website Tonic, the Los Angeles Times reports 106.5 million people watched the Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts on CBS.

The tally surpassed the number to watch the final episode of hit series MASH, starring Alan Alda in 1983. The MASH finale was watched by an average 106 million viewers, the website reports.

The weekend storm in the mid-Atlantic may have factored into the tally by keeping viewers indoors.

Tonic, for its part, claimed the record fell “because of the inspirational season the New Orleans Saints gave its fans, and those who became fans of the team that brought the city its first professional sports championship”.

The site added: “The win by no means makes up for the devastation from Hurricane Katrina but it does provide a remarkable story of how a team can take a city on its back and bring its residents together in celebration.”
