David Letterman is still a smooth operator.

The sex scandal-hit talk show host climbed a ladder in his studio to present Courteney Cox’s mother with a bunch of birthday flowers.

Cox’s 75-year-old mother, also named Courteney, sat in the front row of the balcony at Letterman’s New York studio, but that did not put the comic off.

With the Friends star watching on, Letterman took off his jacket and climbed the ladder to hand over the red roses.

Cox told Letterman that her family was with her in New York to celebrate her mother’s birthday.

A woman has claimed that TV psychiatrist Dr Phil held her captive at his offices and forced her to stare at a naked man.

Shirley Dieu sued Phil McGraw in the Los Angeles Superior Court, also alleging he grabbed her left breast after he forced her into “the same room with a completely naked live man while he exposed his entire naked body, genitals and all”.

Dieu said she went to McGraw to seek therapy in 2007. But he tried to brainwash her and force her to endure physical and emotional abuse, court papers state.

She also alleges staff stopped her from leaving the building. Dieu alleges McGraw is not a “real” doctor or licensed to practise in California.

The alleged con artist behind the extortion scam was arrested after Letterman contacted police who advised him to send the a phony cheque to the blackmailer.

Letterman – who married Regina Lasko, his girlfriend of 23 years, in March – acknowledged his infidelity live on air and revealed the plot as he opened his show on Thursday. He and Lasko have one son together, Harry, 5.

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” he told the stunned studio audience at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre. “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

Letterman, 62, said he received a package from an individual who claimed to have information on his affairs and said he would be exposed unless he came up with the money.

But instead of submitting to the shakedown, Letterman contacted the Manhattan district attorney’s office instead.

It is not the first time the TV host has been targeted by extortionists. In 2005, a handyman who worked for him was jailed for 10 years after pleading guilty to plotting to abduct Harry.

President Barack Obama showed his good humour as he was given a heart-shaped potato during an interview on a late night talk show.

He also played down stories that racism had a part in people’s opposition to his policies – noting he was already black long before being elected.

The US president has been making a blitz of appearances on television as he bids to persuade Americans on the benefits of his controversial healthcare reform plans.

But, after a rapturous reception by the audience at the Late Show with David Letterman, Obama started off on a light-hearted note.

The host had earlier ridiculed an audience member for bringing to his attention she had a heart-shaped potato with her.

Obama riffed on the quip by saying that was the actual reason for coming on the show.

He said: “The main reason I am here? I wanna see that heart-shaped potato.”

Letterman handed the potato to Obama, who looked at it and smiled as he said: “That’s remarkable. This is remarkable.”

He then, with the audience member’s consent, kept the potato.

Actress Michelle Pfeiffer says she was stunned to be told she had an “old and decrepit body” by a foreign journalist.

The actress appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman recently to promote her new movie Cheri, and revealed that while doing press all over the world she is always asked about her age.

“I’ve been all over, we were in Berlin and we opened the Berlin Film Festival. I got asked a lot of interesting questions. This character is, as they say, coming upon a certain age. I’m actually 51, so I get a lot of questions about age as it is one of the themes of the movie, an older woman and a younger man.”

However, the actress says she was left stunned by one exchange with a female journalist.

“This one woman said, ‘So tell me, how does it feel now to have an old and decrepit body?’. I thought I mustn’t have understood – she didn’t really say that. So I asked her, ‘Did you say how does it feel to have an old and decrepit body?’ She said, ‘Ja, ja – how does it feel?’”

The actor earlier announced he is quitting acting to build a career as a rapper. If he decides to stand pat on his decision to turn rapper, Joaquin Phoenix’s last movie could be the drama “Two Lovers” where he plays a tortured man to Gwyneth Paltrow’s volatile neighbor character.

The movie may just get a big boost thanks to Joaquin Phoenix’s much-publicized strange attitude. He has been getting free publicity lately, albeit a negative one, after he appeared in The David Letterman show. Joaquin Phoenix was so silent and awkward during the TV show where he was supposed to promote the movie so David Letterman came up with the line “I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight”. He was also mimicked by Ben Stiller in last Sunday’s Academy Awards and was featured as a gun-chewing, bearded and seemingly “off” man.
